The Layar Publishing site is up, with support for Layar 3.0 layers! Developers can start making their 3.0 layers immediately by going to http://dev.layar.com
Changes this release:
- 3D Objects (see the Layar Wiki for details)
- Unlimited POI types
- Support for more textbox and slider filters
- New checkboxlist filter – there can be more than one
- User authentication – cookies
- Auto-triggered actions
- Local layers – a new way to define and find layers
- Flexible radius – Return as many POIs as you need, and then set the radius
- Improved layer validation, and automatic support for older client versions
- POI-to-POI capability, for story-telling and guided tours

Last Saturday Peter Svensson organized an Android Hackathon in Stockholm. Peter asked me to explain how to make your own layers for Layar. Some 50 developers gathered to hack a new Android app in a day. Obviously the developers came to the Hackaton to write some Java code for Android, not some PHP code or other webservices to create a Layar. So we didn’t get new layers at the end of the day.

Jens de Smit developed a PHP-based POI server for Layar which is called PorPOISe, the Portable Point-of-Interest Server for Layar. Jens is currently working at SURFnet in the Netherlands.

We are very proud to announce that today the 200th layer has been launched: Le Vélo STAR layer in the city of Rennes, France.
Le Vélo STAR is a bike rental service with bike stations throughout the city of Rennes. The layer shows you where is the nearest rental station around you and how many bikes are available at this station.
We spoke with Amiel Lavon, Directeur de projet from In Cité Solution who developed the layer, just before he went off for an official photo shoot to make wonderful screen shots of the “Le Vélo STAR”-layer.
Well, you are the 200th layer, congratulations!! What is your first reaction on that?
Surprise, we have this idea in mind for several weeks, but just found the time to develop the layer this week. We found that Layar is a great technology and we are happy to provide the 200th layer, and we hope to provide a lot of layers in the future.
What do you think is the coolest part of your layer?
The real time information of bike availability. Our layer provides not only the position of the bike station but also the number of bikes on each station in real-time.

What are your future layer plans? And will that next layer be nr 201 or will it take some more time
We plan to provide a layer for a social network on Rennes city and we work a lot with the transportation sector in France and we plan to provide some layer with us around bike, bus and metro. And a last word, we use Typo3 cms for development and we plan to release an extension for it in open source to share with the developer community.

Layar is currently not compatible with the Verizon Droid by Motorola that was launched today in the US.
This is due to an API change in the Android implementation on this device. It breaks a feature that was enabling Layar to draw a camera view in portrait mode and overlay it with the well-known Layar interface elements. Unfortunately this is not something that can be fixed easily. Therefore Layar is not available for users of Verizon’s Droid phone at this moment. Note that the Verizon Droid Eris phone is supported, as it runs on a different Android implementation.
The upcoming major version of Layar (v3) will change this and we will also support Android 2.0 devices in this new version. We expect this version to hit the Android Market in a few weeks. For all of you with a Verizon Droid, thanks for your patience.
