Yesterday Layar v3 was published in the App Store. After a flood of complaints that the app crashes for many users, we’ve decided to remove the app from the store. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
We had issues already since the very first launch of the iPhone app. Unfortunately these issues were due to bad memory management decisions right from the start, something that we could not easily fix without completely re-engineering the app. There is some old code in there that is buggy and we don’t know exactly where the bug is. Since the app worked fine for 80% of the users (and on all our testing devices), we decided to move on to v3 before we would rebuild the framework of our app. We’ve tested v3 thoroughly internally and did not have any issues with crashes when submitting to the App Store. In fact, we still cannot reproduce the crashes that many of our users are reporting right now.
The percentage of users with crashes has grown too much with the launch of v3 to justify keeping the app online. We don’t want our users to be confronted with an app that is unusable due to systematic crashes. We take great pride in our product and are very serious about delivering high quality to our users and our developer community. We’ve already started re-engeneering the app, but this won’t be finished in a matter of days, rather a matter of weeks.
Our sincere apologies to our developers who put a lot of effort into making great content for Layar v3 that can now only be viewed on Android. We are proud of the layers you made and we will put all our efforts into making them available on the iPhone as soon as possible.
Muzar.org has just launched the new, free and augmented way of sending season greetings.
At the www.muzar.org one can submit the coordinates of the home / house or whatever from the recipient and add a personal message. You can even choose the 3D model you want to place at that location. After completing the form an email will be sent to tell the lucky one he / she has received a 3D card (with a small explaination how they can view the “card”).
Imagine the possibilities of creating, sharing and giving away public or personal messages and 3D objects and pictures.
Spread the word and make this Xmas and new year celebration an augmented one.
We just heard that System K in Japan has launched a very cool campaign with the wellknown japanese hip-hop artist SEEDA.
Seeda will release a new single next week. System K collaborated with him to create a promotional layer. In the week leading up to the CD release fans can visit major locations around Japan (Tokyo Tower, Kobe Mosiac, Sapporo Clock Tower). When fans get close to these wellknown landmarks in Japan, the layer will autotrigger an audio sample of the new single Wisdom. Layar users are the first to hear the new track and are also treated with a special video message from Seeda that is personalized for each location.
Autotriggered actions associated with objects is a feature that is supported by Layar Reality Browser 3.0. Any developer can add an autotrigger to an object. Developers can customize the range (when does the autotrigger need to be activitated) and the action can be customized (play audio, play video, open website, etc). It’s very exciting to see this feature of our platform being used in such a creative way.
So if you are in Japan just search for SEEDA in the Layar Browser and you will find the special promotion layer.
Due to the holidays we will not review your pending layers for publication between 18th of December and the 4th of January. So if you want to publish your layers before Christmas please do this asap.
In time for the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen, ClimateActionMap.org is excited to announce a mobile version of the map using the Layar platform. ClimateActionMap.org is a non-profit online platform that allows cities across the globe to share their best practice climate initiatives. Today more than 40 cities around the world have listed their best practice climate initiatives and more are joining each week.
The Climate Action Layer has been launched just in time for the UN Climate Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen where government leaders from more than 100 countries are gathering along with 20.000 participants from non-profits to negotiate a global agreement to curb CO2 emissions. ClimateActionMap.org is presenting the map together with its partners from the US National League of Cities, Local Government Denmark and UN Habitat in order to highlight the importance of local government action in reducing CO2 emissions.
ClimateActionMap.org was launched in June 2009 to help communicate local climate initiatives to a global audience. Sharing our local knowledge and expertise globally is fundamental if we want to address climate change in a serious and timely manner. Our mission is to educate, inform and inspire governments, communities and businesses about the innovative local climate action activities around the world. Local Governments and local initiatives are key factors for creating a successful implementation of any Post-Kyoto agreement.
The ClimateActionMap.org platform is free to use for any city administration in the world. It allows cities to easily upload information, images, video and files about climate initatives using a simple and intuitive web interface. It also allows cities to track and manage their climate initiatives across different city departments and helps communicate climate initiatives to a broad range of stakeholders by generating a city scale map of local climate initiatives.
The Climate Action Layer was developed by Winvolve. Winvolve has developed multiple successful Layars and applications and is one the forefront of new technology. They are Layar representing partner in North-America and work closely together with local and international organizations in concept creation and development of Mobile and Application experiences.
You can visit Winvolve’s website at www.winvolve.com. To read more about the Climate Action Map visit www.climateactionmap.org.

This is just a quick post to mention one of the new features in the Layar 3.0 Publishing site: Required Features.
Just to be clear, – all of your v3 layers are handled gracefully on v2 clients. Any v3 features you use will be downgraded the best we can. So, for instance, if your layer is trying to use a flexible radius, but someone is using the v2 client, the range will be set to 1500 (the default). The client will not use flexible radius because it can’t.
If a v3 functionality is crucial for the layer to work properly, you can use the ‘Required Features’ pop-down to select which features you require. If the user is using a version of the client that does not support that feature, the layer will not appear in any lists.
I hope this clarifies the Required Features list a bit.
