John Sietsma is a game developer who is creating a game on the Layar platform called Jewel Collector. This game, which is still in development, is the first of it’s kind and will be demo’d at Mobile World Congress by Layar.
The purpose of the game is to collect as many points as possible. Points can be earned by collecting jewels which are scattered around the MWC exhibition area. You can collect a jewel by walking up to it. Every hour a new round is started and winners of the hourly rounds can be seen on a score board.

Last weeks we worked hard to improve our client and we have some updates in place.
We improved the start-up time of our application and the lighting of 3D objects within Layar.
The biggest update from our side is the support of local languages. We now support the following languages: English, German, Greek, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Russian and Turkish

After a lot of questions and activity on our google groups we decide to create a tutorial that is fully focused on 3D. This tutorial will take you through the basic principles of 3D modeling and how to get your 3D models in a layer.
Besides that we also learned a lot in the past couple of weeks. We used all the questions and feedback that we received in our tips and tricks topic within the tutorial.
If this tutorial still doesn’t answer your 3D related questions please join our google groups or send an email to developers@layar.com

We are always excited to see third parties developing useful tools and services on top of the Layar open platform. One of them is the newly released Hoppala Layerserver.
Hoppala Layerserver is a cloud POI hosting service for third party content providers. The basic idea is to free content providers from creating and maintaining their own Layar webservice code. It provides you with an easy way to integrate your existing Google map into Layar. But it can also import different file formats like KML, CSV, XML or Excel. The Hoppala website shows several different kinds of content integration.
