Verizon's new Droid is currently not supported by Layar

By dirk on November 6th 2009

Layar is currently not compatible with the Verizon Droid by Motorola that was launched today in the US.

This is due to an API change in the Android implementation on this device. It breaks a feature that was enabling Layar to draw a camera view in portrait mode and overlay it with the well-known Layar interface elements. Unfortunately this is not something that can be fixed easily. Therefore Layar is not available for users of Verizon’s Droid phone at this moment. Note that the Verizon Droid Eris phone is supported, as it runs on a different Android implementation.

The upcoming major version of Layar (v3) will change this and we will also support Android 2.0 devices in this new version. We expect this version to hit the Android Market in a few weeks. For all of you with a Verizon Droid, thanks for your patience.

That explains why I couldn’t find Layar in the Android Market this morning.

If you need an Alpha or Beta tester, I’m here for you.

  • By mike norris on November 6th 2009 at 8:46 pm

    I second that alpha/beta tester. I’ll put v3 though it’s paces…
    ;)

I am a very heavy smartphone user and I will also like to offer my Alpa/Beta support.

Whew. Layar was one of the reasons I bought the Droid. I’ll be patient, as Layar is highly recommended by all of my Android-loving friends.

Thank you so much for keeping us new Droid adopters in the loop. Loving the Droid, can’t wait for Layar to get here.

  • By David Poff on November 6th 2009 at 11:19 pm

Ahhh of course. I wanted this app so bad. I will wait. Looking forward to seeing it soon on the Droid! Part of the reason I bought it after all is that Android had most of the best AR apps. Take your time, I’ll be in line :)

Anyway to be notified when 3.0 is available?

And thanks for letting all us new Droid owners know right away…I was wondering when I couldn’t find it in the market from my phone even though it’s featured on the site.

  • By Adam Mollenkopf on November 7th 2009 at 2:39 pm

  • By Ron Schott on November 7th 2009 at 3:47 pm

I’ll just add another “Me too!” I’m already itching to get my hands on v3. God speed, developers!

  • By RHilliard on November 7th 2009 at 5:50 pm

I thought I was losing my mind! I saw the app in the first few hours but then couldn’t find it in the market later. Layars is the reason I didn’t wait to get a Droid.

I too would like to volunteer as an alpha/beta tester.

  • By Steve on November 7th 2009 at 9:36 pm

I would also love to test Layar if you all need any help.

Cool. Thanks for the update. I’m looking forward to using it on the droid.

Yep, also a huge factor in my support of Android (it’s very exemplary of Android’s power). If you need a tester, just e-mail me, I’ll be glad to help out :)

  • By Art on November 13th 2009 at 4:38 pm

This page needs to get up in Google’s rankings, because all I could find was press releases about it unless I searched “android market layar.”

Good to see it’s in devel, because I just stumbled upon it and thought it looked like a great app. So a couple weeks means over a month right?

  • By virtus on November 13th 2009 at 5:20 pm

Is it only broken in portrait mode? Could you release an intermediate version that allows you to disable portrait mode?

  • By huchris on November 13th 2009 at 5:50 pm

Layars looks impressive. I’m looking forward to Layars on the Droid! Thanks in advance for all the hard work.

  • By John G. on November 18th 2009 at 5:55 pm

I can’t wait to try this app! I had seen the Augmented Reality demo on another Android phone, and was first in line when the droid was released in Boston because of it. It looks like a truely phenomanal product, and like virtually everyone above me I would be more than happy to alpha/beta test for you!

  • By Kevin on November 18th 2009 at 9:59 pm

I will also volunteer to beta test the v3. Layar app on my Droid. Lookin forward to it.

  • By Brett on November 19th 2009 at 1:59 am

I don’t want this to sound pushy because it’s not at all what I’m going for. Is there anything you feel you can say about the status of the 3.0 update? As you said in the post, it’s not an easy fix, so I’m not expecting it tomorrow or anything, but is there anything you feel comfortable saying in terms of an ETA?

As with so many others here, I’m more than willing to be a beta tester if such a thing is possible.

Looking forward to using this on my Droid whenever I can get it.

  • By Adam Long on November 26th 2009 at 12:46 am

Happy to test, work at a software company so I know what to help with.

  • By shane on November 28th 2009 at 12:18 am

Why does the Black Friday ad (for 11/26/09) from Verizon show Layar Reality Browser v2.1 running on the Droid if its not possible to get it? Is this Layar’s mistake or Verizon’s? What a tease…

  • By mbehren on November 30th 2009 at 10:04 pm

Schweet! I’m also available for alpha or beta testing!! *S*

  • By Jim W on December 1st 2009 at 9:37 pm

OK, that explains why I couldn’t find it on Marketplace via my Droid phone……. thought I was losing my mind!

    I’ll wait also. Thanks!

  • By shane on December 3rd 2009 at 3:38 pm

ok… v3 is out? Still not available for Droid. FAIL!

  • By mcglvry on December 3rd 2009 at 6:20 pm

3.0 is out… soooo, Droid can?

  • By Todd on December 3rd 2009 at 7:03 pm

So, what’s the status of it? How much longer do we have to wait? How about an update?

Take a look at the Droid sales numbers and you’ll see we’re an army of folks waiting for some good apps.
