New Layer Roundup: Nerds, Celebs and Bus Stops

Chris Cameron July 11, 2011

Every day we see lots of great new layers published on the Layar platform, so we thought we’d give you a quick heads-up on some that caught our attention lately. Layar is used in many ways all over the world, and here’s three layers that demonstrate this well.

Night of the Nerds - The Netherlands

NEMO, the science center located here in Amsterdam, is hosting a sequel event to last year’s first Night of the Nerds. The event features clinics, speakers and, of course, people doing science! To promote this year’s installment, NEMO has created a promotional layer that features a 3D spaceship trailing a banner for the event behind it. The theme from “The Twilight Zone” plays as you focus on the spaceship, which hovers over the location of NEMO.

Celebrity Homes - United States

Forget buying one of those over-priced star maps the next time you’re touring Hollywood, this layer has all you need. Want to join the paparazzi and stalk celebrities, but need helping tracking them down? Then look no further than the Celebrity Homes layer, available in the U.S. for all your star gazing desires. Each of the over 300 locations are in either Hollywood or Beverly Hills, and feature a link to further information about the occupant of the home. If you’re in the area, go hunting for actors, athletes and rock stars and send us your screenshots!

Autobuses Málaga - Spain

In Spain, the EMT (Spanish transit authority) and Orange have teamed up to provide bus riders with a layer featuring the location of bus stops in the city of Málaga. Now residents and visitors to the Spanish city can easily find the nearest bus stop, and as an added bonus, can view the estimated wait time for the next bus. The layer is part of a commitment to sustainability and innovation on the part of the EMT, and they hope the layer will attract more users to the bus system.

Sevilla FC Connects with Football Fans on Layar

Chris Cameron June 21, 2011

In recent years, Spain has become the country of champions when it comes to football.

In 2010, Spain conquered The Netherlands (we’re still recovering here in Amsterdam) in the World Cup Final with a last minute extra-goal just minutes before the match would have gone to penalty kicks. And just last month, Barcelona defeated England’s Manchester United to win the UEFA Cup for Spain.

Spain is also leading on another forefront - the use of augmented reality and Layar. Spain has fostered some truly impressive augmented reality experiences, including many layers on our platform. With a new layer from one of our Spanish partners, B_Cultura, the worlds of football and augmented reality have finally come together!

With the new Sevilla FC layer, fans of the La Liga club can pose for virtual photographs with their favorite stars. Forward Frederic Kanoute, defender Mauhamadou Dabo, keeper Javi Varas and midfielder Guarente are all posed in the AR view so you can snap a photo with them. You can also take a picture wearing a virtual jersey of the club, including home, away, alternate, Europa League and Copa del Rey variants.

To cap it all off, you can also pose with the team’s emblem, as well as a model of the UEFA Cup. With Layar 5.0’s sharing features, users can easily share their screenshots with friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter.

It’s all very basic and very fun, especially for big fans of Sevilla FC. We at Layar are very excited to see a major football club take it’s first steps into augmented reality and can’t wait to see more intersections of AR and football!

Find and Connect with 20,000 Spanish Pharmacies in the Cruzvirtual Layer

Adriane Goetz June 1, 2011

Here on the blog we feature a lot of new layers with impressive 3D models or (more recently) animations, but sometimes, less is more. Many of the most popular and useful layers on the Layar platform are the simple and functional ones that provide relevant and plentiful information about one’s surroundings.

The new Cruzvirtual layer, a project created by Layar partners ElipseAD for major Spanish pharmaceutical cooperative Cofares, is a perfect example of how a simple-looking layer can be extremely effective.

The Cruzvirtual layer is a collection of nearly 20,000 pharmacies in Spain with location information and contact options for each. About 2,000 pharmacies in the database have also paid for the “premium” services, which adds email, hours of operation and social sharing capabilities to the pharmacy’s listing - a unique example of how developers can produce revenue from layers!

In the coming months, there are also plans to add a direct messaging system to the premium pharmacies that would allow customers to request products, pharmacies to solve customer issues and more.

In addition to being on the Layar Browser, Cruzvirtual is also available in a free, standalone app in the App Store.

Spanish Geeks Get Their Frikoño On

Chris Cameron May 9, 2011

We’ve all got a little freak and geek in us, and there is no prouder community of nerds out there than the fans of the epic saga that is Star Wars.

Star Wars fans come in all shapes and sizes and hail from all around the world - including Logroño, a city in the north of Spain.

Last week, the city’s residents celebrated “Frikoño 2011” - a week long fiesta dedicated to all things geek. To mark the occasion they dressed up as Star Wars characters, held a 12-hour marathon viewing of the television show “Big Bang Theory,” marched through the streets in “Lord Vader” parades and even competed in “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock” - a nerdy twist on a classic game.

In addition to these geeky festivities, local technology company Esidea created a layer to promote Frikoño using augmented reality. Keeping with the Star Wars fandom, the layer features detailed 3D models of classic Star Wars ship and vehicles, including the Death Star, Star Destroyers, AT AT walkers and more.

Check out the layer on your mobile device (if you’re in Spain) or simply watch the video below to see the Empire and the Rebellion in Layar!

You can scrub ahead to the 30 second mark, or you can submit yourself to the strangely entertaining introduction (in Spanish, of course).

Layar’s 3D Augmented Office at Mobile World Congress, and an Introduction to Virtual Commerce

Adriane Goetz February 17, 2011

As we mentioned last week, Layar is attending the 2011 GSMA Mobile World Congress conference/exhibition in Barcelona from 14-17 February, and we weren’t about to show up empty-handed.

Each afternoon at MWC Fountain, Layer is holding an Augmented Reality meetup where we show off our new Augmented Office layer, an interactive 3D model that you can literally walk into and access information about the company, layer content, job openings and more.

This layer was created especially for MWC, so it is only visible from Barcelona, but there is also a public version that can be viewed from anywhere in the world.

The 3D office combines elements of virtual reality with AR, enabling a 360 degree view of the space. You can look up at the multilevel ceiling, down at the tile and wooden floors, and around through the many windows where you can still see the “real” world.

Turn or walk around in the office and you see posters on the walls of some of our Layar Partner Network members, where you can touch the pop-up screen to visit their website, email them or follow them on Twitter. You also find portraits of our co-founders and our reps at MWC that you can contact or connect with on Twitter right from the layer.

Continuing the office tour, you see posters on the windows for five of our coolest international layers that you can launch directly from inside the Augmented Office layer (A layer within a layer? Now we’re approaching Inception theory—be careful!).

Finally, near the doorway, you see a monitor on the wall that says “Layar News & Jobs” where you can see the current job/internship opportunities and read the latest news on our blog.

The concept of an “augmented office” allows any company to become an international company. You can place an office in the heart of Tokyo, Dubai or at Time Square in New York City.

But just as easily as you can place an office, you can place a store, selling merchandise through Paypal in AR! Case and point: Hostage Wear Shop. Hostage Wear is Layar’s first AR store, selling hats, t-shirts and other urban skate/streetwear products directly from the layer—there’s even a half-pipe in the store! (Although we don’t recommend trying to skateboard in AR… yet).

Funnily enough, the Hostage Wear Shop layer actually started out as a joke. Herve Pellarin, creator of both Layar’s Augmented Office and Hostage Wear Shop (and the concept of virtual commerce in general), originally made the layer for his best friend to, in Pellarin’s words, “shut his mouth” about the frustration and expense of constantly having to make the tradeshow circuit to gain brand recognition and sell merchandise.

As anyone working in AR knows, monetization is a major issue at the moment, so virtual commerce is an exciting and much welcomed new element to the platform.

Pellarin is the man behind French development company HPSC, a member of the Layar Partner Network. He has made virtual commerce his primary focus, embarking on several new [mostly confidential] projects, and continues to push the boundaries in AR. Pellarin may still wear the coding hat, but assures us “I’m not a programmer. I’m a dreamer; an AR-chitect.”

You can contact Herve Pellarin at nocomp@gmail.com or follow @nocomp on Twitter.
